CITY OF COLTON
POWER LINE TECHNICIAN APPRENTICE
POWER LINE TECHNICIAN ^
DEFINITION
To install, service and maintain overhead and underground
electrical lines and distribution system equipment; to climb and
work atop poles; and to operate a variety of equipment including
electrical test meters, line trucks, forklifts, and backhoes.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Power Line Technician Apprentice - This is an entry level
Position. The class is distinguished from the Power Line
Technician level in one of two ways:
Routine and repetitive duties are performed according to
established procedures, and changes in procedures or
exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they
arise.
Use as a training class for flexibly staffed positions.
In the latter use, the incumbents of the class would lack a
complete knowledge of department procedures and precedents and
not yet be able to perform the full range of duties assigned to
the journey level without immediate supervision.
Power Line Technician - Positions in this class are flexibly
staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the Power
Line Apprentice level, or when filled from the outside, require
prior electrical utility maintenance experience. Appointment to
the Power Line Technician level requires that the employee be
performing the full range of duties for the class and meet the
qualification standards for the class. A Power Line Technician
is distinguished from a Power Line Technician Apprentice in that
incumbents assigned to the Power Line Technician level are
expected to perform assigned duties with only occasional
instruction or assistance and work is normally reviewed only on
completion. Adequate performance at this level requires the
knowledge of electrical utility maintenance procedures, methods,
and techniques as well as a knowledge of applicable department
policies and procedures.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Power Line Technician Apprentice
Received immediate supervision from the Line Crew
Supervisor.
Exercises no supervision. r
