CITY OF COLTON <br />WATER OPERATOR II <br />DEFINITION: <br />The operator will inspect pumping equipment such as boosters, wells and reservoirs, which <br />includes a daily check of all the water system facilities; record and maintain daily records of <br />operational data; and report any needed repairs or unusual noises such as vibrations. <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: <br />Receive general supervision from the Water Systems Operator, Chief Utility Operator, Water <br />Utilities Coordinator and Water Utilities Manager; may also receive assistance from the Water <br />Quality Control Inspector for water quality related requirements; and may supervise the work of <br />others. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: <br />Collects and reviews water sample data from both wells and system water samples to assure <br />meeting State limit requirements; maintains records for daily inspections of the wells, booster <br />stations, reservoirs and related telemetry systems alarms; performs minor repairs to leaking pump <br />packings, servicing of altitude valves to assure proper functional operation; inspects reservoirs for <br />any visual problems such as unauthorized entry, settling around the retaining ring and needed <br />repairs such as painting or leaks to be reported; assists in collection of water samples; monitors and <br />adds necessary chlorine to sand vaults, reservoirs or wells as needed or scheduled; maintains and <br />cleans as necessary all water filters for wells and booster station control valves; operates portable <br />booster pump, generators (both under and off load operation to assure immediate emergency <br />availability). This will be on a scheduled basis; performs related duties as assigned. <br />QUALIFICATIONS <br />Knowledge of: <br />Principles, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in water sampling procedures required <br />by the State, in the hydraulic testing of electrical pumps and motors as performed by Southern <br />California Edison, and in the repairs of minor electrical problems as performed by City's <br />electricians; water system operation relating to hydraulic needs for emergency inter -zone <br />connection either transferring up or down between water pressure zones; chlorination principles <br />and disinfection requirements in all applicable situations; methods of determining all zones <br />water demands to assure proper supply in the zones, especially during emergency outages; <br />necessary applicable repairs to pump packing shaft couplings and related vibration problems. <br />Ability to: <br />Develop a daily inspection of the water system facilities; understand the basic telemetry control <br />functions and how they operate the water system; make necessary changes for pump rotation to <br />maintain even pump hours for longer pump operation; communicate effectively, both orally and <br />in writing any reports, as required; anticipate necessary changes in system operational <br />requirements and adjust equipment appropriately; understand water regulations and <br />requirements pertaining to water sampling; prepare and maintain daily records and scheduled <br />on-going preventative maintenance programs; respond effectively to emergency situations as <br />they arise; order any necessary charts, materials and chlorine as related to duties. <br />
