CITY OF COLTON <br />INTERMEDIATE TYPIST CLERK <br />Under supervision, to do a wide variety of clerical and typing work of average difficulty; and to do <br />other related work as required. <br />CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Positions in this class are filled by advancement from the lower level class of Junior Typist clerk, or <br />when filled from the outside require prior clerical experience. An Intermediate Typist Clerk works <br />under supervision and within a framework of established procedures, and is expected to perform a <br />wide variety of duties with only occasional instruction or assistance. Performance requires a <br />knowledge of departmental procedures and the ability to choose among a limited number of <br />alternatives in solving routine problems. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Types; looks up <br />information for department or public use; complies, tabulates, check, and types statistical data; <br />maintains various files; posts a variety of information to various types of control records; types <br />purchase orders; checks invoices against purchase orders; answers telephones; receives the public <br />and handles routine business or refers to appropriate person; answers inquires from the public <br />regarding routine procedures; operates office machines such as postage meter, adding machines and <br />copying machines; operates a small switchboard; transcribes police reports from transcriber; <br />operates radio teletype machine. <br />DESIRABLE OUALHICATIONS: <br />Knowledge of: Modern office terminology, procedures and equipment; business arithmetic; basic <br />elements of good English usage and spelling. <br />Ability to: Type accurately from clear copy at a rate of 45 words per minute; maintain clerical <br />records and collect information for reports; note and correct errors in grammar, spelling and <br />format; operate a variety of office machines; understand and follow oral and written instructions; <br />work cooperatively with those contacted in the course of work, including dealing with the public <br />with tact and courtesy. <br />EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Any combination of experience and training that could likely <br />provide the required skills and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the <br />knowledge and abilities would be: Graduation from high school or its equivalent, including <br />supplemented by courses in typing and office practices.
