CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For Council Meeting of January 7. 1997
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
FROM: John C. Hutton
Director of Public Work c }
SUBJECT: Request by Burlington Northern Santa Fe (A.T.S.F. R. R.) for closure of certain
streets in order to repair and/or reconstruct existing R. R. crossings.
Request for consideration of Reduction/Waiver of Fees.
DATE: December 26, 1996
BACKGROUND:
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad is repairing, removing Wor replacing the rails at the
crossings listed below:
"E" Street Pennsylvania Ave to 7th St January 13th through 17th, 1997.
"H" Street Pennsylvania Ave to 7th St January 20th through 24th, 1997.
Valley Blvd Pennsylvania Ave to 7th St January 27th through February 7th, 1997.
The proposed projects will consist of:
1. Removal of existing disconnected tracks through the crossings.
2. Construction of one track on the west side of the most westerly track through the
crossings.
3. Removal of timber crossing material and replacement with concrete crossing panels with
rubber inserts within the three crossings.
4. Repave the A.C. roadway track approaches per the vertical curve alignment plan.
5. Pave the pedestrian walkway areas between the tracks and a minimum of 20 feet from
the outside tracks providing a smooth pedestrian walkway across the tracks.
6. Remove and reconstruct the raised island medians at Valley Boulevard.
This is a project which will not only benefit the RR itself, but also the City of Colton in general. The
particular crossings targeted are currently in disrepair, there is nothing between the tracks to buffer
damage to vehicles using these crossings and there is no pedestrian area crossing said tracks and
the area directly adjacent to the tracks (located within the RR right-of-way) is in poor condition..
DISCUSSION:
A 24 Hour Street Closure has been requested for 5 consecutive working days for both "E" Street
and "H" Street, and a 24 Hour, 5-10 day Partial Street Closure has been requested for Vallgy
Boulevard.
Page 1 of
Item No. 15
