i <br />I <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />POLICE OFFICER <br />DEFINITION <br />To perform law enforcement and crime prevention work to control traffic flow and enforce state <br />and local traffic regulations; to perform investigative work and other special assignments; to <br />perform a variety of technical law enforcement tasks. <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED <br />Receives general supervision from a Police Sergeant. Technical and functional supervision may be <br />provided by higher level police personnel. <br />Assignments may require functional and/or technical supervision over sworn and non -sworn <br />personnel. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: <br />As a Patrol Officer, patrol City in radio -equipped car; answer calls for the protection of life and <br />property, and the enforcement of City, county and state laws: _ may conduct both preliminary and <br />follow-up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, hold-ups, death and other <br />criminal incidents: <br />Patrol the City and respond;to calls related to trafficincidents and any other required emergencies; <br />observe, monitor and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist and advise motorist and <br />enforce traffic safety laws_ <br />When assigned, serve as field training officer, train new officers in areas such as traffic <br />enforcement, safety, report writing and policy and procedures; supervise, train and prepare <br />schedules for reserves. <br />When assigned, serve as a Police Detective: coordinate and conduct complete and detailed <br />investigations of crimes involving juveniles and adults, crimes against persons and property, and <br />crimes involving vice, gambling and narcotics violations. <br />When assigned, serve as a Police Corporal, in addition to other assigned duties; provide functional <br />and technical supervision to sworn and non -sworn police personnel; perform the duties of Police <br />Sergeant as required. <br />When assigned, serve as a Police Identification Officer; collect and preserve evidence at scene of <br />crime and/or accident; lift fingerprints; draw sketches; take photographs. <br />When assigned, serve as a Community Relations Officer: present programs to the public on crime 77 <br />prevention; promote, organize and implement programs to improve relations between the Police <br />and the community; perform employee background investigations for sworn and non -sworn <br />personnel; receive, log and serve subpoenas. <br />
