01
To: Mayor and Council VAR 2 6 1997
CZYc s cOLToN
From: Councilmember Deirdre Bennett A1AY °q0FF?CE
Subject: March 26, 1997 Special Council meeting
This memo is to formally protest the calling of a speecialmeeting for items that are
not emergency issues
There are many reasons that I feel this is an inappropriate meeting, a few of those reasons
are as follows: the .Mayor knew that 2 members would be out of town today (this was
posted on our last Council agenda); a majority of Councihnembers hold down fail time
jobs, these unnecessary "special' meetings negatively impact their families and outside
employment; and lastly, several items listed should be deliberated on as a full body, the
outcome decided together.
I would respectfully request that these items be held over to our next regular
Council meeting. This would allow a discussion from all members of this body, rather
than give the community an impression that some members hold a personal agenda and
are attempting to slip something past our residents that may not be in the best interest of
this City.
I will end with something that I pulled off America On bine. It was in a site called
"'Knowledge and Encouragement." They list the structure of a team as
"... The "Team" consists of individuals who believe in and are willing to ACT in a
manner consistent with the mission, principles and goals. Each team member (Paladin)
is considered a peer worthy of equal respect regardless of distinctions such as gender,
religion, wealth, education level; race, job title, political views; or age. The power of the
team is based on the combined voluntary actions of diverse individuals with different
strengths and weaknesses. The ability of each individual to uphold the mission under
daily pressure, adversity, and criticism will determine the success of the team Friendship
and community among Paladins is encouraged on an individual basis."
The dictionary defines "Paladin" as: one of 12 peers of Charlerrmagne's court; a hero or
champion. They must be using this term to represent a member of a group.
To recap: I would respectfully request that these items be held over until our next
regular Council meeting (with the exception of the approval to use Fleming Park for
a Sunrise Service)_ Many members have stated. that they want to begin working as a
team, this is the opportunity to step forward and show that your words were seriously
stated.
Thank you, in advance for your consideration.
