Al CITY OF COLTON
BUILDING INSPECTOR I
BUILDING INSPECTOR 11
DEFINITION:
To inspect new buildings and commercial buildings for compliance with state and local codes
and safety standards; to review plans; and to investigate complaints, substandard structures, and
buildings to be moved.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Building Inspector I
This is the entry level class in the Building Inspector series. The class is distinguished from the
11 level in one of two ways.
Routine and repetitive duties are performed according to established procedures, and changes in
procedures or exceptions to rules are explained in detail as they arise.
Use as a training class for flexibly staffed position.
In the latter use, the incumbents of the class would lack a complete knowledge of department
procedures and precedents and not yet be able to perform the full range of duties assigned to the
journey level without immediate supervision. However, as experience is acquired, the employee
performs with increasing responsibility.
Building Inspector U
This is the journey level class in the Building Inspector series. Positions in this class are flexibly
staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the lower class of Building Inspector I, or
when filled from the outside, require prior building inspection work experience. Appointment to
the higher class requires that the employee be performing substantially the full range of duties
for the class requiring a complete knowledge of department policies and procedures and meet the
qualification standards for the class. A Building Inspector II is distinguished from a Building
Inspector I in that incumbents of positions assigned to the II level are expected to perform the
entire range of moderately difficult combination inspections (building, electrical, plumbing and
mechanical) of a variety of commercial and new buildings with only occasional instruction or
assistance.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Building Inspector I
Receives immediate supervision from the Supervising Building Inspector.
Building Inspector II
Receives general supervision from the Supervising Building Inspector.
Exercises technical supervision over technical staff.
