CITY OF COLTON AGENDA REPORT (Continued) For the Council Meeting of November 4, 1997 SUBJECT: Approval to begin bid process for a type III engine for the Fire Department F nt t The Fire Department has always maintained at least 2 reliable engines in reserve to ensure that fire companies remain in service when their front line unit is in the shop for routine maintenance or for extended repair. When a reserve unit is not available, that fire company is out of service, this also includes paramedic engine companies. This situation has occurred on several occasions in the past 2' months. The 97/98 budget included $56,500 to lease purchase one Type I Municipal En gine t replace the engines taken out of service and a Type III Brush Engine to replace the water tender that was taken out of service. In light of the current budget issues facingthe city, we conceded to reduce this amount to approximately �'� Type III Engine for use as a brush eng' a as ll as a reserve egineand ase purchase only the ALTERNATIVES: Postpone lease purchasing the Type III Engine which results in reducing the first alarm brush assignments to the Reche Canyon/La Loma Hills areas and continue to provide one reserve engine. F FINANCIAL IMPACT: It is anticipated that bids will, be approximately $180,000 to $200,000, with 10 annual Payments of approximately $25,000. RECOMMENDATIONS: Staff recommends that the City Council approve going out to bid for a Type III B Engine. The short term budget committee has reviewed this recommendation rush concurs. on and
