I <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />MAINTENANCE WORKER I <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under direct supervision, to perform routine unskilled and limited semi -skilled manual tasks in <br />the construction, maintenance, repair and service of the Community Service Department <br />activities; and other related work as required. <br />CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: <br />Work of this class includes performing work of a manual nature which does not require a high <br />degree of manipulative skill or previous experience in order to do an effective job. Work is <br />usually performed under immediate supervision, although work assignments which are repetitive <br />in nature, once learned, can be carried on without difficulty under only general supervision. <br />Assignments often include the use of standard hand tools and the occasional operation of light <br />duty trucks or other equipment on a relief or fill-in basis. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: <br />• Assists in cleaning and unclogging of storm drains, sewer lines, and catch basins. <br />• Assists in such tasks as laying, tapping and repairing sewer and water lines, building <br />manholes and catch basins. <br />• Assists in the removal and installation of water meters and fire hydrants. <br />• Performs a variety of gardening, grounds maintenance and cleanup in parks, parkways and <br />cemetery not requiring specialized knowledge and skills. <br />• Assists in interments and disinterments. <br />• Assists in breaking pavement, placing and shoveling asphalt and concrete, tamping and <br />smoothing asphalt and concrete. <br />• Digs out holes with power and manual digging tools. <br />• Fills depressions with slag or gravel. <br />• Directs traffic. <br />• Picks up tree limbs, shrub trimmings and other trash. <br />• Assists in maintenance and repair of city buildings and facilities. <br />• Loads and unloads materials from trucks. <br />• Moves or aids in moving heavy boxes or equipment. <br />• May operate trucks and other automotive equipment on a relief or fill-in basis. <br />• Assists in the installation of signs, markers and benches. <br />• Assists other members of the crew in varied work assignments. <br />DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: <br />Knowledge of: <br />• Uses and purposes of hand tools and methods employed in basic laboring work. <br />• Rudimentary safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools and <br />equipment. <br />
