I CITY OF COLTON MAINTENANCE WORKER I DEFINITION: Under direct supervision, to perform routine unskilled and limited semi -skilled manual tasks in the construction, maintenance, repair and service of the Community Service Department activities; and other related work as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: Work of this class includes performing work of a manual nature which does not require a high degree of manipulative skill or previous experience in order to do an effective job. Work is usually performed under immediate supervision, although work assignments which are repetitive in nature, once learned, can be carried on without difficulty under only general supervision. Assignments often include the use of standard hand tools and the occasional operation of light duty trucks or other equipment on a relief or fill-in basis. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: • Assists in cleaning and unclogging of storm drains, sewer lines, and catch basins. • Assists in such tasks as laying, tapping and repairing sewer and water lines, building manholes and catch basins. • Assists in the removal and installation of water meters and fire hydrants. • Performs a variety of gardening, grounds maintenance and cleanup in parks, parkways and cemetery not requiring specialized knowledge and skills. • Assists in interments and disinterments. • Assists in breaking pavement, placing and shoveling asphalt and concrete, tamping and smoothing asphalt and concrete. • Digs out holes with power and manual digging tools. • Fills depressions with slag or gravel. • Directs traffic. • Picks up tree limbs, shrub trimmings and other trash. • Assists in maintenance and repair of city buildings and facilities. • Loads and unloads materials from trucks. • Moves or aids in moving heavy boxes or equipment. • May operate trucks and other automotive equipment on a relief or fill-in basis. • Assists in the installation of signs, markers and benches. • Assists other members of the crew in varied work assignments. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of: • Uses and purposes of hand tools and methods employed in basic laboring work. • Rudimentary safety precautions and practices necessary in working with hand tools and equipment.
