CITY OF COLTON <br />FIRE CAPTAIN <br />DEFIINIT'ION: . <br />Under the direction of the Fire Battalion Chief, direct, coordinate and supervise the activities and <br />operations and serve as company commander of a fire suppression engine company; coordinate <br />engine company activities with other City departments/divisions and outside agencies or <br />organizations; establish engine company goals, objectives, policies and procedures in accordance <br />with the department and City's mission statement and goals; and provide professional, <br />administrative and technical support to the Fire Chief and the Fire Battalion Chiefs. <br />DISITNGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Fire Captain is a supervisory level class responsible for managing an engine company of <br />fire fighting personnel. This classification is distinguished finm the next lower classification of <br />Fire ;Engineer by the performance of supervisory duties and the responsibility of managing all <br />employees, for an entire engine company. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />Exercises direct and functional supervision over technical, clerical and volunteer staff. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following,)- <br />• Accept .management responsibility for activities, operations and services of an assigned <br />engine' company including the supervision, performance and safety of assigned fire fighting <br />and paramedic personnel on the scene of an emergency incider maintain discipline on calls <br />and in company quarters. <br />f <br />• Overseeand/or participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of the <br />engine' company goals, objectives, policies and procedures; *ensure that company goals are <br />achieved. <br />• Assist in coordinating the maintenance and repair of fire suppression equipment and facilities <br />such as; hydrants, trucks, and support equipment; oversee the on-going upkeep of quarters, <br />equipment, vehicles and apparatus at an assigned fire station, <br />• . Assist in coordinating the selection, orientation, training and evaluation programs for engine <br />company personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; identify and resolve staff <br />deficiencies; fulfill discipline procedures <br />• Perform a variety of general staff work as assigned, including the staffing of and participating <br />in special committees, coordinating special projects, overseeing volunteer programs, and <br />providing staff support to Fire Administration. <br />• Oversee the completion of all paperwork necessary for staffing and operating a shift, <br />responding to calls, and providing information to Fire Actminstzason. <br />• Participate in the development of the fire suppression budget' research items for budget <br />justification and inclusion; discuss and resolve budget issues with. appropriate staff, <br />implement adjustments as necessary; administer and monitor budget on a day -today basis. <br />• Propose:, present, and justify engine company programs, projects; operations and services; <br />develop a strategy and work plan for the successful- achievement of program and project <br />goals. <br />
