CITY OF COLTON <br />POLICE SERGEANT <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general supervision of the Police Lieutenant or other management personnel, <br />supervise, evaluate, and participate in the work of Police personnel responsible for a variety of <br />law enforcement and crime prevention work including traffic control, special investigations, <br />patrol, problem oriented policing, and other special assignments; ensure proper work practices <br />and work quality in the field and accuracy in writing reports; and serve as a technical resource for <br />assigned Police personnel. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Police Sergeant is the supervisory level class within the Police Officer class series <br />responsible for overseeing and participating in all aspects of police work. This class also <br />typically serves the traditional functions of a Watch Commander or supervision of the Detective <br />Bureau. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Police <br />Corporal/Detective by the acceptance of full supervisory responsibility of an assigned Police <br />Unit or function on a regular basis. In comparison, the Police Corporal/Detective is a lead <br />supervisory position. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />Exercises direct supervision over assigned professional and technical Police personnel. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Plan, coordinate, prioritize, monitor, and participate in the work of Police personnel <br />responsible for law enforcement and crime prevention duties including duties associated with <br />traffic control, special investigations, patrol, problem oriented policing, and other special <br />assignments. <br />• Assign work to assigned personnel within unit; monitor work activities to ensure safe work <br />practices and work quality in the field and accuracy in writing reports; ensure compliance <br />with applicable rules, policies, and procedures. <br />• Perform the more difficult and complex policing responsibilities of the work unit which may <br />include making controversial decisions in the field pertaining to a variety of matters. <br />• Participate in the development of policies and procedures; recommend programs, projects, <br />and work assignments to higher level management personnel. <br />• Develop schedules for department training; maintain appropriate work records and <br />documents which may include timesheets, training records, disciplinary actions and records, <br />and other necessary administrative documentation; prepare statistical and/or analytical <br />reports on operations as necessary. <br />• As the Administrative Sergeant, manage the recruitment, selection, and training of Police <br />personnel; assume responsibility for evaluating new personnel on the basis of their <br />application materials; coordinate and schedule recruitment activities; provide necessary <br />training. <br />• As the Administrative Sergeant, respond to questions, inquiries, and complaints pertaining to <br />any Police Department personnel; research and investigate accusations by the public; assume <br />
