CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />For Council Meeting of January 19, 1999 <br />TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY CO C <br />APPROVAL: HENRY T. GARCIA, CITY MANAGE <br />FROM: CITY ATTORNEY <br />SUBJECT: MAYOR PRO TEMPORE ORDINANCE <br />DATE: JANUARY 12, 1999 <br />Background: The City Council is comprised of an elective mayor and council members from six <br />voting districts throughout the City of Colton. Currently, there is no established process whereby <br />a member of the City Council may be selected to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore. The City Council <br />gave us direction on codifying the selection process. We have prepared the necessary ordinance, <br />as requested. <br />Discussion: The City Council has determined that it is necessary to establish a fair process for the <br />City Council to select a member of the City Council to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore and to <br />implement such selection process immediately. <br />The attached ordinance, adding Section 2.04.020 to the Colton Municipal Code, states that a member <br />of the City Council shall be selected to serve as Mayor Pro Tempore by, a majority vote of the full city <br />council at a regular open meeting. Candidate(s) shall be nominated and elected solely by the City <br />Council, and shall be installed immediately upon election. The Mayor Pro Tempore shall serve for <br />a term of two (2) years or until the expiration of his or her term of city council office, whichever <br />occurs sooner. The ordinance also makes a minor amendment to Section 2.06.020 of the Colton <br />Municipal Code (concerning closed session procedures) by replacing the term "chairperson" with.the <br />term "mayor pro tempore." <br />Recommendation: Approve Ordinance No.19'00koncerning the office of Mayor Pro Tempore. <br />RVPUB\X Y 56050 T <br />T4om # 2 <br />
