F
Year 2000 Issues for the Electric Utility Industry 10
TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!
Unfortunately, operations -related Y2k problems have only very recently begun to be
identified by utilities. Even fewer utilities have taken action to address these critical
risks.
If operational systems are critical to power plant operations, and power plant
operations are critical to company viability, then why aren't utilities acting quickly to
ME address Y2k risks?
A CALL TO ACTION
TAVA/R. W. Beck, LLC is. ready to share its knowledge and experience with utility
operations -related Y2k issues and risk exposures. We can use ourrn oven Y2k products
and services to mitigate your Y2k challenges. Remember,
■ The non-IT/operations-related portion of a utility's enterprise Y2k concern is very
real and significant ... and very neglected. For a utility, company viability is at
stake.
■ Your plants will have problems. Those problems may range anywhere from erratic
annoyances to serious safety/quality problems and long-term generating disruptions.
■ Concurrent problems will cause various breakdown scenarios.
Copyright 1998. CTAVA RWBECK
Because resolution of the Y2k issue has not been identified as "urgent" by the utility:
Time Activity
January, 2000 Completion required.
- Ten Months (minimum) Remediation Implementation: depends on many things such as amount
of non-compliant critical exposures, complexity, amount of integration,
availability of code and specifications, ability to test in place, vendor
support, company support, time, other dependencies, numbers of sites,
degree of standardization and managed implementation, locations and
logistics, etc. Every situation is unique and must be understood for the
most effective resolution.
- Five Months Conversion and Remediation Planning
- Five Months Inventory and Assessment
91
- Two Months Pilot Program
- One Month Identifying, then negotiating an agreement with a key products/services
11
partner
= February, 1998 Latest required Y2k start date. This has passed. You're already too
late.
11
You have less time than you think!!! No company has time to spare. In fact, for many
of our clients we are acting rapidly to repair only critical systems. Large, multi -plant
utilities, which do not plan to act now, should develop disaster recovery plans for critical
operations.
A CALL TO ACTION
TAVA/R. W.
