CITY OF COLTON <br />ENGINEERING/GIS TECHNICIAN <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general direction of the Electrical Systems Engineer, performs the full array of duties <br />assigned to classes in the Engineering series including performing specialized technical work in <br />the operation and maintenance of the City of Colton GIS (Geographic Information System); <br />performs CAD drafting, GIS data entry, graphic editing, geographic data analysis, production of <br />a wide variety of maps, reports and other GIS related products; performs a variety of other tasks <br />in support of assigned area of responsibility. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Engineering/GIS Technician is the journey level class responsible for performing <br />moderately complex work related to GIS and utility engineering projects. This classification is <br />distinguished from the Electrical Engineering Technician by virtue of the type of projects <br />assigned, and distinguished from the classification of Senior Electrical Engineering Technician <br />by the assignment of less complicated technician duties. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Performs the work of staff responsible for office and field engineering work. <br />• Provides GIS support for utility department and other city departments, as required. <br />• Generate high quality cartographic layouts for specific projects, and meetings. <br />• Creates and maintains AutoCAD drawings and systems maps for the Utility Department <br />(Electric, Water, Wastewater and Storm Drain). <br />• Performs typical GIS maintenance functions including software installation, maintenance and <br />upgrades; system backup and archives; hardware support and operation; GIS data entry, <br />quality control checking and maintenance; GIS application development support and <br />maintenance; GPS data capture in the field; digitizing new data, input attribute data and <br />create associated documentation; work with GIS consultants. <br />• Evaluates assigned work projects; estimates time, materials and equipment necessary for the <br />successful completion of the project; acquires necessary resources as is appropriate. <br />• Prepares construction plans, work orders, and specifications for the installation of <br />underground and overhead electrical distribution systems. <br />• Ensures adherence to safe work methods, procedures and practices. <br />• Identifies training opportunities and needs; makes recommendations to higher level staff. <br />• Responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as- is <br />appropriate or makes referrals to appropriate staff members and resolves service complaints. <br />• Performs other related duties as required. <br />WORHING CONDITIONS: <br />Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, <br />bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also <br />requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in preparing reports and <br />using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading <br />written reports and work-related documents, and operating assigned equipment. Acute hearing is <br />required when providing phone and counter service. <br />
