April 25, 1999
Colton City Council
City Hall
650 N. La Cadena
Colton, CA 92324
Honorable Mayor and City Council Members,
On April 26, 1999, the Parks & Recreation Commission held a meeting to discuss the
future of West Valley Park. While we are sensitive to the community's need for a park in
that area, we have a major concern for the safety of individuals who would be using the
Parka Our position is that in the Park's current condition, it should not be re -opened..
However, after careful consideration of citizen needs versus safety concerns, we have
decided that, should Council choose to implement Phase I of the renovation plan for West
Valley Park, we would concur, with the following safety recommendations:
1) that the park be open during daylight hours only
2) that Council authorize the installation of video cameras (with signs posted)
3) that the Park be subject to re-evaluations prior to beginning Phase II and
Phase Ill
We realize that there is no place on earth that is one -hundred -percent safe. However, we
feel a responsibility to the community that some attempt at ensuring safety should be
made.
Sincerely,
Rosemary Colungi
Vice -Chairperson, Parks & Recreation Commission
Prepared by: K.
