CITY OF COLTON <br />SENIOR ACCOUNTANT <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general supervision of the Assistant Finance Director, performs a variety of complex <br />and professional accounting duties in municipal finance; assists in monitoring the City's cash and <br />investment activities, accounts payable and receivable functions and expenditure budgets; <br />participates in other professional and technical accounting work; assists in the training of less <br />experienced technical and professional accounting staff. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Senior Accountant classification is the advanced journey level class within the professional <br />Accountant series. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of <br />Accountant by assuming more complex and technical responsibilities associated with the City's <br />budget, cash and investments and other financial activities. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />Exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level professional and technical <br />accounting staff. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Perform the full array of duties assigned to classes in the professional Accountant series <br />including monitoring cash and investments, expenditure budgets, accounts payable and <br />receivable and other financial activities. <br />• Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods <br />associated with assigned duties. <br />• Participate in the preparation of financial statements; prepare a variety of financial reports <br />and statements to illustrate financial disbursements, balances and other activities. <br />• Monitor and analyze department budgets; make recommendations for budget adjustment as is <br />necessary. <br />• Post and maintain financial records for various accounts and funds. <br />• Prepare, or assist in preparing year-end schedules, mid -year budgets, and full year budgets. <br />• Reconcile a variety of assigned accounts; ensure that accounts are in order. <br />• Monitor and analyze various department grants such as the Community Development Block <br />Grants and various Police Department grants. <br />• Assist in the development of general ledger trial balances and maintenance of budgetary and <br />accounting controls. <br />• Examine and verify financial documents, classified and code accounting source data, and <br />make adjusting and closing entries. <br />• May supervise subordinate personnel in the maintenance of general construction, property <br />and subsidiary ledgers, journals and budgetary accounting records in accordance with <br />acceptable accounting procedures, laws, ordinance and other regulations. <br />• Perform other related duties as required. <br />WORKING CONDITIONS: <br />
