CITY OF COLTON <br />ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general supervision of a Police Sergeant, enforces City, State and Federal animal <br />control laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances; take stray and/or vicious animals into custody <br />and transport them to the local animal facility; distributes animal licenses to City residents. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Animal Control Officer is a single position class responsible for maintaining and enforcing <br />City, State, and Federal animal control laws and regulations, collecting stray and dead animals, <br />and distributing animal licenses. This classification is distinguished from the sworn <br />classification of Police Officer by the performance of duties directly applicable to animal control <br />(only) and in that it has limited police powers prescribed by the law. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (includes but are not limited to the following) <br />• Responds to citizen complaints pertaining to dead and stray animals within the City limits; <br />removes dead animals from streets and other public property; and takes into custody stray <br />and/or vicious animals that are a nuisance to the public. <br />• Patrols City streets and looks for any acts that are in violation of City, State or Federal laws, <br />codes, regulations, and/or ordinances including stray dogs or cruelty to animals; issues <br />citations to animal owners for failure to comply with rules and regulations. <br />• Investigates reports or complaints of cruelty to animals and takes corrective action. <br />• Responsible for the care of animals that are in custody; feeds and waters animals as <br />necessary; transports animals to the County pound; decides on the disposition of animals. <br />• As is necessary, may be required to euthanize animals. <br />• Maintains and composes animal control reports for higher level personnel; makes <br />recommendations regarding animal control methods and procedures; implements any <br />changes to approved changes in animal control standard operating procedures. <br />• Performs other related duties as required. <br />WORKING CONDITIONS: <br />Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, <br />turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand <br />movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision <br />when performing animal control duties and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, <br />carry, and push animal control equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also <br />required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions <br />including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning chemicals which may expose the <br />employee to fumes, dust, and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the <br />incumbent to drive motorized vehicles, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work <br />with constant interruptions. <br />QUALIFICATIONS: <br />Education and/or Experience: <br />
