ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER <br />Page 2 of 2 <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />Any combination of education and experience that has provided the necessary <br />knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for an Animal Control Officer. A typical way <br />of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess a high school diploma. Some <br />directly related college level course work and the equivalent of six months of part-time <br />animal control experience, or passed probation in a similar position are highly desirable. <br />License/Certificate: <br />Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid class C California driver's license. <br />KNOW LEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS: <br />Knowledge of: <br />Operations and standard operating procedures of an animal control program. <br />Methods and techniques for properly handling and caring for injured animals. <br />Basic medical protocol for the treatment of animals. <br />Complex principles and practices of animal control. <br />Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations. <br />Operational characteristics of animal control standard equipment. <br />Occupational hazards and standard safety practices. <br />Methods and techniques for basic report preparation and writing. <br />Ability to: <br />Handle a variety of animals safely and in a humane fashion. <br />Perform a variety of basic medical and emergency protocols in the treatment of animals. <br />Courteously respond to community issues, concerns, and needs. <br />Analyze animal control issues and develop and implement an appropriate response. <br />Analyze and evaluate new and existing service delivery methods and standard operating <br />procedures. <br />Make adjustments to standard operating procedures as is appropriate. <br />Apply applicable laws, codes, and regulations. <br />Work independently. <br />Respond to issues and concerns from the community. <br />Understand and follow instructions. <br />Establish and maintain effective working relationships. <br />Skill to: <br />Manipulate animal control tools and equipment. <br />Effectively operate a vehicle on City streets. <br />APPROVED BY COUNCIL: February 17, 1998 <br />Revised: June 3, 1999 <br />Per Henry Garcia, City Manager <br />
