CITY OF COLTON <br />LEAD EQUIPMENT MECHANIC <br />DEFINITION: <br />DRAFT <br />Under the general supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Manager, performs the full array <br />of duties assigned to the Equipment Mechanic series including the inspection and minor and <br />major repair of all mechanical and power driven equipment and automobiles; demonstrates a full <br />understanding of all applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned <br />duties, assist in the training of less experienced mechanics; and assumes responsibility for <br />maintaining work areas. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Lead Equipment Mechanic is the advanced journey level class within the Equipment <br />Mechanic series with responsibility of overseeing the work performed by Mechanics within the <br />Automotive Shop, this is a working position <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED <br />Exercises technical and functional supervision over journey level and semi -personnel. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Assist the Equipment Maintenance Manager in complying with DOT <br />Inspections and completion of all necessary paperwork. <br />• Lead, train and assist journey level and semi -skilled mechanics; assign work to mechanics; <br />assist the Equipment Maintenance Manager in the day-to-day supervision activities. <br />• Inspect, diagnose and locate mechanical difficulties on City automobiles, trucks and a variety <br />of diesel and gasoline -powered maintenance and heavy equipment. <br />• Weld, fabricate and assemble parts and equipment for City automobiles and heavy equipment; <br />weld, braze, cut, shape and fasten metal parts; fabricate and weld hydraulic lines, vehicle <br />frames, chassis and exhaust systems. <br />• Use welding equipment, drill presses, metal brakes, metal shears, lathes, grinders and a large <br />assortment of other power and hand tools and measurement instruments required for journey <br />level fabrication work. <br />• Overhaul, repair and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches and heavy <br />equipment hydraulic equipment. <br />• Tune up engines, replace electrical and electronic parts and clean and adjust fuel systems. <br />• Replace or repair faulty parts, including wheel bearings, clutches, or oil seals, shock <br />absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms and related parts and equipment. <br />• Diagnose and repair electrical and computerized automotive systems. <br />• Prepare and replace such components as generators, distributors, relays, lights and switches. <br />• Assist in the purchasing of equipment maintenance parts and materials. <br />• Conduct monthly safety meeting <br />• Oversee smog certification records on City owned vehicles and insure that all smog <br />certifications are completed in a timely manner. <br />
