PAGE 3
"THE HUB CITY"
In 1906, the Colton Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Colton Area Museum Association produced a small brochure
about the City of Colton.
One of the well known and accepted names for our City, was "The Hub City". We
were known as the center, the hub.... the place where the two transcontinental rail
roads crossed.
Today, every hour, we hear the whistle of the one remaining railroad as it barrels
through the City of Colton, on tracks laid many years ago.
Besides three transcontinental railroads passing through Colton, were several steam
roads connecting the "Hub" with other Southern California cities, including San
Diego. A fine trolley car service connected Colton with the other cities of the valley.
Construction of a line to Riverside was planned, and also to Los Angeles.
So the 'Hub City" was truly the center of commerce, and planning to become a
critical point in the movement and transportation of goods throughout the state.
'Forging ahead Cohon became the Hub Dty'
As a shipping and distributing point, Colton was unsurpassed: in volume of shipping
it ranked third in the state. The fact that Colton was the only city in the valley on the main line of the Southern Pacific railroad
partially explains why it was such an important point It was, at the time, a direct track to every other point in Southern
California_._ truly THE HUB CITY.
The Colton Chamber of Commerce would like to capture the spirit of those days, create anew brand for our City, pulled from its
heritage and history, and build upon the strength of its pastas it combines with the goals of today—we want to breathe new life
into the old vision of Colton as "The Hub City".
MARKETING & EVENT PLANNING
With a combined experience of over 50 years of event planning and marketing experience, the staff at the Colton Chamber of
Commerce is well-equipped to produce activities and gatherings from the smallest, most intimate affair, to conferences and
luncheons for hundreds. The Annual Christmas Parade, Annual Recognition Luncheon and Discover Colton Night are thriving
examples of the attention to detail and quality production possible through the efforts of our staff, board and volunteers. These
two events have historically drawn crowds of local residents and businesses., and continue to be popular events in our City.
As the marketing arm of the Redevelopment Department, the Colton Chamber of Commerce has often been the initial contact for
prospective businesses to the City of Colton. And, following their arrival in our City, we have been the first contact representing
the City as each new business is mailed a welcoming letter, and given a phone call or personal visit after their doors open for
business in Colton. The Colton Chamber of Commerce continues to provide a citizen and business referral service, answering
questions, responding to citizen inquiries, and providing in-
formation packets to businesses and individuals all over the
world.
The business retention and improvement program supported
through City funding and Chamber effort is beneficial to the
City, the new business and the Chamber. Itis the foundation of
a very positive three-way partnership - a win -win-win, so to
speak, for all involved.
For the past several years, the Chamber has provided each new
business in Colton with a welcome portfolio including letters of
welcome from our Chief of Police and the Chamber of
Commerce. This Information packet includes materials and irr
formation about the City of Colton. We feel a personal wel-
come on behalf of the City strengthens and underscores the
synergistic approach of Team Colton and shows appreciation
for the new business choosing Colton as its home.
