CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF February 19, 2002
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
R
FROM: Ron Kenny, Director of Parks, Recreation & Family Services
Item #21
SUBJECT: Request for Approval of Ken Hubbs Memorial Little League Anniversary
Activities
DATE: February 13, 2002
BACKGROUND:
Little League Baseball has been provided in the City of Colton since 1952. Initially, it was known
as Colton Lion's Little League. In the late 1960's it was renamed for Ken Hubbs, a long time
resident that grew up playing Little League Baseball in Colton. He went on to be a member of the
Major League Chicago Cub's infield. However, his career was tragically cut short when he was
killed in an airplane crash. His death shortly followed his selection as the National League Rookie
of the Year in 1962. Little League Baseball in Colton has offered thousands of youth the
opportunity to participate, while learning not only baseball skills, but also "life skills" enabling
them to become productive citizens. This year the program will mark its Fiftieth Anniversary.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
To mark its Fiftieth Anniversary, Ken Hubbs Memorial Little League is requesting to hold a one -
day celebration on Saturday, March 23, 2002. The day would begin with a parade commencing at
10:00 a.m. in south Colton and culminating at Lofy Park. Ceremonies marking the anniversary
would take place at the park following the parade with game and food booths opening at 11:00 a.m.
Activities would continue until a fireworks show at 7:00 p.m., which would end the day's activities.
League officials are requesting the closure of some streets for the event. For the parade they are
asking that the following streets be closed between 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. They include "O"
Street at La Cadena Drive, north along La Cadena Drive to "E" Street and east to Colton Avenue.
"D" and "E" Streets between 10' Street and Colton Avenue would be closed from 9:30 a.m. until
8:30 p.m. Handicapped parking would be provided along the East Side of "E" Street between
"10th" Street and Colton Avenue. The Police Department, with day of assistance from the Public
Services Department, has approved the requested closures.
The League is requesting that one way parking be allowed on the railroad right of way adjacent to
Colton Avenue. Vehicles would enter from "D" Street, park diagonally on the East Side of the
right of way and exit on to "E" Street.
The League is also requesting that the City Council approve the use of a "Beer Garden" within Max
Lofy Park during the event. The facility would be run and supervised by The Gents Organization.
