CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF January 15, 2002
TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council
2
FROM: Ron Kenny, Director of Parks, Recreation & Family Services
SUBJECT: Request for the Appropriation of Funds for a City-wide Unity Day
DATE: January 9, 2002
Item #14
BACKGROUND:
Since the dark day of September 11, 2001 this country has experienced a resurgence of unity. It has
swept not only the country, but also individual citizens. Unity is defined as oneness, continuity of
purpose and harmony. In an effort to embrace this concept and to make it meaningful here in
Colton, a Unity Day is proposed.
DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS:
Colton's initial Unity Day would be held on Sunday, April 28, 2002. It would be presented at
Cesar Chavez Park from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
A "Select Blue Ribbon Committee" of 15 members would be convened to include representation
from residents, community based service groups, business professionals, the community's
Ministerial Association, the Chamber of Commerce and government. They would be
recommended and invited to participate by the City Council and charged with the responsibility of
developing the event. The Parks, Recreation and Family Services Department would be
responsible for staff liaison to the "Committee" and the actual implementation of the event.
As a suggestion, the "committee" could be comprised of the following combination of members:
Service organizations: 4
Business professionals: 4
Residents: 4
Recreation & Parks Commission: 1
Ministerial Association: 1
Chamber of Commerce: 1
Department staff has already met and completed some preliminary brainstorming. Ideas to be
considered by the "Committee" could include live ethnic and general entertainment, ethnic foods,
patriotic music and events, informational presentations by various cultural groups, presentations on
the history of Colton and the Inland Empire as well as community organizational booths.
