CITY OF COLTON <br />METER TECHNICUN <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general supervision of the Meter Operations Supervisor, performs skilled electrical <br />work in connection with the installation, testing and repair of electric meters, instruments and <br />related equipment. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Meter Technician is the journey level class in the Meter Technician series. Positions in this <br />class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the apprentice level, or, <br />when filled from the outside, require prior electric meter maintenance experience. Appointment <br />to the journey level requires that the employee be performing the full range of duties and meet <br />the qualification standards for the class. A Meter Technician is distinguished from a Meter <br />Technician Apprentice in that incumbents of positions assigned to the journey level are expected <br />to perform assigned duties with only occasional instruction or assistance, and work is normally <br />reviewed only upon completion. Adequate performance at this level requires the knowledge of <br />advanced meter maintenance procedures, methods and techniques as well as knowledge of <br />applicable department policies and procedures. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED: <br />My provide functional and/or technical supervision to lower level technical staff. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Test, program, repair and install various types of commercial, industrial and residential <br />electric and electronic meters with and without instrument transformers. <br />• Perform field and shop load surveys. <br />• Maintain accurate records as required. <br />• Analyze electronic data through PC based software. <br />• Perform related duties as required. <br />WORKING CONDITIONS: <br />Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, <br />turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand <br />movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision <br />when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, <br />equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the <br />incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot, and cold. <br />The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals which may expose the employee to <br />fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb <br />ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, drive motorized vehicles and heavy <br />equipment, work in heavy traffic conditions and often work with constant interruption. <br />QUALIFICATIONS: (The followingare minimal qualifications necessaryfor entry into the <br />classification) <br />Education and/or Experience: <br />Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, abilities <br />and skills necessary for a Meter Technician.
