Rancho Avenue
Colton, CA 92324
Deaz Mr. Perales:
This proposal is in reference to the SymBio application at the City of Colton Water
Reclamation Facility (WRF). We appreciate your interest in this awazd-winning technology.
The SymBio process assesses the changes in the level of nicotinanude adenine dinucleotide
(NADFi) in the biomass to provide operators real-time informarion regazding biomass health and
oxygen demand. Based on the NADH and dissolved oxygen (DO) trending data the intemal
recycle, aeration, and/or the air distribution system may be automated to establish simultaneous
nitrification and denih-ificarion in the same reactor. Research and installations all over the world
have shown that this process can successfully and continually operate at less than 1.0 mg/L of
DO (see Section 3).
This proposal only covers the application of the SymBio process for upgrading the oxidarion
ditch system (Plant #3) within the City of Colton WRF. Plant #3 consists of five pazallel
oxidation ditches (each designed for 1.0 MGD). The current operarion urilizes only three ditches
(each -operating at 0,7 MGD)-and-three- clazifiers. - The_main _objecrive for this_ SymBio _____
application is to significantly reduce energy consumption by operating a simultaneous
nitrification/denitrificarion process under very low DO conditions.
Attached aze process calculations based on the current process infotmation you provided
including a current average flow of 2.1 MGD, an average influent concentration of 320/250/32
mg/L BOD/TSS/TKN, an average effluent requirement of 5/5/10 mg/L BOD/TSS/TIN, and a
summer/winter wastewater temperature of 25/15°C. The process calculations indicate that the
plant can achieve SymBio conditions and treat the current flow in only two ditches. In addition,
power requirements aze estimated to decrease from 300 hp to 103 hp. Reducing the number of
operating ditches from three to two reduces operations and maintenance (O&M) costs and
automatically guazantees a reduction in energy consumption by 33% since the plant currently
operates its surface aerators at continuously at full speed. Furthermore, the implementation of
SymBio process controls provides operators with real-tune information and the means to
optimize the activated sludge process. Based on our experience with the SymBio process and
our evaluarion of the existing operation of Plant #3, we guazantee a 50% reduction in the
monthly average energy consumption of the ditch surface aerators as compazed to the current
operarion with three ditches (see the Process Guazantee in Section 1), thus resulting in a payback
of less than 20 months. In siunmary, the facility can expect the following benefits with the
Colton, CA - Proposal - R2.doc
2404 Rutland Drive, Suite 200,514,gu3ggusy'µ, , gox 9069, Austin, TX 78766
Tal (fil l R.9d-AMfI • Fnx 15191 R3d-(,fl,'i9 e F-Mnil PnvimrrrCaanuirnrri iin nm
I f
¢GL
