CITY OF COLTON <br />POLICE SERVICES TECHNICIAN <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under the general supervision of the Police Sergeant or his/her designee, performs non sworn <br />police support work in various assignments within the department which may include code <br />enforcement, community service officer, animal control, and/or dispatching duties. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: <br />The Police Services Technician is responsible for performing a full range of assignments within <br />the Police Department. Employees in this class are expected to acquire a working knowledge of <br />laws, codes, regulations and procedures applicable to assigned work and, after initial training <br />under supervision, are expected to function with a high degree of independent judgment in <br />accordance with laws, codes, regulations and procedures. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but are not limited to the following) <br />• Demonstrate a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods <br />associated with assigned duties. <br />• Respond to questions and concerns from the general public; provide information as is <br />appropriate and resolve complaints. <br />• Performs a variety of general office duties including answering the telephone and providing <br />counter assistance to the public. <br />• Perform a variety of duties specific to assigned areas of responsibility which may include <br />code enforcement duties, community service officer duties, animal control duties, and/or <br />dispatching duties. <br />When assigned to Code Enforcement <br />• Conduct field investigations regarding complaints and initiate investigations of violations of <br />City codes and ordinances to obtain compliance. <br />• Investigate complaints and violations by researching property deeds, lot lines, past violation <br />histories, utility records and other topics to ensure complete assessment of situations under <br />investigation. <br />• Issue Notice and Order to Repair, Notice to Abate, Administrative and Criminal citations in <br />accordance with City codes and procedures; prepare cases for presentation before the Hearing <br />Authority, the City Council and the Court and testify on behalf of the City in the proceedings; <br />produce photographs and other evidence as required. <br />• Submit cases to the City's Hearing Authority to determine if the violation is deemed a Public <br />Nuisance; obtain necessary warrants to enforce orders; enforce orders of the Hearing <br />Authority as required; prepare reports for testimony in Criminal and Civil Court proceedings; <br />and maintain expense records for cost recovery. <br />When assigned to Community Service <br />• Interview citizens and prepare reports on accidents, offenses and incidents. <br />• Assist in controlling traffic at emergency and accident scenes. <br />
