Schwarzenegger's proposed polities and Initiatives are attacking
the backbone of CaMlornia's Infrastructure.
A JW
The caregivers of California are under attacki Last year the governor focused
his assaults on SB 1419 and classified employees. This year, under the guise
of "reform," he is attacking more than a million California workers and their
families — firefighters, nurses, teachers, classified employees, peace officers
and others who serve the people of California. He is going after the people
who protect our homes and communities, teach and look after our children,
care for the elderly and disabled, protect the environment and serve California citizens in dozens of
other ways. Governor Schwarzenegger's proposed policies and Initiatives are attacking the backbone of
California's infrastructure and the future of our state.
Tough times call for tough action ... and time are tough timesl So what are we doing? We are fighting
back, mobilizing our resources and taking actionl I am proud of the efforts that have been made—but
there Is so much more work to be done. CSEA members, staff and our coalition partners have
participated in more than a dozen concerted activities already. If you were involved, I thank you. If
you have not been invited to participate in one of these events, you will be.
This battle will last through spring, summer and likely into the fall. We are taking a multifaceted
approach to combat the governor's campaign against the people of California. When appropriate,
we've taken our message to the street —rallying to help local communities and media better
understand our position. We are working diligently within the Education and Labor Coalitions to
maximize our collective efforts and to prove, In spite of rhetoric by detractors, that our special
Interests are the students
of California's public schools and colleges. We've also begun pursuing legal action to help stave off
these attacks. You will be hearing more as these efforts develop.
Our recently forged relationship with the California Labor Federation (CLF) is paying dividends.
Through that affiliation, we've not only been able to build relationships with our brothers and sisters in
the public sector, but have also enlisted the support of private sector unions. The CLF has pledged
support and funding for our cause.
The governor, if he does not get his way with the legislature, has promised to take his Issues directty
to the voters with a special election in November. In that event, our coalition is pursuing several
offensive measures to be placed on the same ballot. Last year, the governor vetoed good legislation
that would have substantively Improved the lives of Californians — measures that promised cheaper
prescription drugs for seniors, protections from unscrupulous car dealers and a needed Increase in the
minimum wage. If he Insists on holding an unnecessary and expensive special election, we will take
that opportunity to counter some of the damage he has done by placing these vetoed initiatives on the
fall ballot — putting them directly before the voters of California... and we will win!
We want and need your opinions, Ideas and participation. During the next couple of months, Executive
Director Bud Dougherty and I will be traveling throughout the state conducting town hall -style
meetings with members. Not only will we explain what CSEA Is doing to protect its members
hard-earned rights; well share our plans on how you can get involved. Look for us at a town hall
meeting near you! Working together we can defeat Governor Schwarzenegger's campaign against
public education, workers and the people of California!
:)f 2 4/19/2005 5:37 PM
