SUBJECT: Approve Resolution Authorizing the Acceptance of Grant Funding and Amendment of the Adopted Budget for Fiscal Year 2005-2006, in the Amount of $1,000 DATE: December 8, 2005 ITEM #9 BACKGROUND: The Colton Public Library's Homework Assistance Center has received authorization for grant funding, in the amount of $1,000, from the Wal-Mart Store in Colton. These funds will be used to purchase educational materials to support the "Families for Literacy" and Homework Assistance Programs in the Library Division of the Community Services Department. DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: The Colton Public Library endeavors to reach preschool, elementary and middle school-age students and their parents who are in need of basic reading instruction and tutoring. We work with these individuals so that parents can better teach their children, and together they can overcome the cultural, educational, and economic disadvantages that transmit poor literacy skills from generation to generation. FINANCIAL IMPACT: In order to accommodate the receipt of this grant funding, Library revenue account 211-7847 and Library expenditure account 211-6200-7101-2301 will both increase by the grant amount of $1,000. There is no net financial impact to the Library Grant Fund. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: None CONFLICT OF INTEREST: None RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that City Council approve RESOLUTION authorizing the acceptance this grant funding and amendment to the adopted budget for fiscal year 2005-2006. The grant, donated by Wal -mart of Colton, in the amount of $1,000, is for enhanced literacy and homework services in the Library Division of the Community Services Department.
