CITY OF COLTON <br />GENERAL LABORER <br />DEFINITION: <br />Under direct supervision, this is an unskilled to semi -skilled maintenance position <br />requiring heavy manual labor in the repair, construction and maintenance of the City and <br />associated facilities. The position is based on a temporary/part-time basis. <br />ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (include but not limited to the following): <br />• Performs heavy manual labor in a variety of construction and maintenance work. <br />• Dig ditches, trenches, and post holes; backfill trenches; load and unload dirt and <br />construction materials. <br />• Install street barricades and cones, conduct traffic control, and install signs and <br />legends. <br />• Perform asphalt removal, patching, shovel, rake, assist asphalt installation. <br />• Remove concrete, grade area, construct forms; pour, assist finishing concrete, <br />masonry. <br />• Clean debris from storm drains, catch basins, sewers, streets, parking lots and <br />walkways. <br />• Collect and remove refuse and debris; perform janitorial work. <br />• Paint sports and park facilities, buildings, equipment and piping. <br />• Operate maintenance power tools, saws, mowers, trimmers, paint sprayers and hand <br />tools. <br />• Cut grass and weeds; rake and load grass and brush; mow lawns and clean grounds; <br />assist in planting, watering, and caring for shrubs and flowers. <br />• Assist in maintaining and preparing athletic fields including hand grading, filling, and <br />shaping of baseball diamonds. <br />• Assist journey level building maintenance trade workers in moving furniture and <br />equipment, removing and laying of carpets, and construction or maintenance projects <br />as assigned. <br />• Assist other skilled workers in a variety of crafts and trades; may act as flagman when <br />working on City streets; may drive City vehicles, as assigned. <br />• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships and assists co-workers with <br />minimum of direction. <br />• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; keep accurate records. <br />• Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily or emergency <br />operations of the employer. <br />WORKING CONDITIONS: <br />Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, <br />twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making <br />repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties.
