employee, completed within the 30 -day period immediately proceeding <br />the date when the employee's probationary period is due to expire. <br />SECTION 2. Objective of Probationary Period. The proba- <br />tionary period is a part of the examination process and shall be <br />utilized for closely observing the employee's work and for securing <br />the most effective adjustment of a new employee to his position. <br />SECTION 3. Rejection of a Probationer. During the pro- <br />bationary period, an employee may be rejected by the Department Head <br />without cause and without the right of appeal or hearing. With re- <br />gard to public safety officers, there shall be no punitive action <br />undertaken without providing the officer with an opportunity for <br />administrative appeal (Government Code 3304, (b)). Notification of <br />rejection in writing shall be served on the probationer and a copy <br />filed with the Personnel Officer. <br />SECTION 4. Rejection Following Promotion. An employee in <br />the competitive service, rejected during or at the expiration of a <br />probationary period following a promotional appointment, shall be <br />reinstated to the position from which he was promoted unless charges <br />are filed and he is discharged in the manner provided in the personnel <br />ordinance and these rules for positions in the competitive service. <br />An employee in the competitive service, promoted or trans- <br />ferred to a position not included in the competitive service, shall be <br />reinstated to the position from which he was promoted or transferred <br />if, within six months after such promotion or transfer, action is <br />taken to reject or dismiss him,, unless he is discharged in the manner <br />provided for positions in the competitive service. <br />
