CITY OF COLTON <br />LIBRARY CLERK I/II <br />DEFINITION <br />Under general supervision, performs clerical library and public <br />contact work; provides check-out, return, registration and <br />circulation desk services; performs related work as assigned. <br />CLASS CHARACTERISTICS <br />Library Clerk I is the entry level class in its library patron <br />service support series. Initially under class supervision, <br />incumbents perform the more routine duties while learning city <br />policies and procedures and becoming familiar with library <br />systems and practices. This class is alternately staffed <br />Library Clerk II and incumbents may advance to the higher level <br />after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency which <br />meets the qualifications for the higher level class. <br />Library Clerk II is the journey level class in this series. <br />Incumbents exercise some independence of judgment in the <br />application of library policies and performance of patron <br />services but are not expected to handle technical reference or <br />advisory service questions. This class is distinguished from the <br />library Assistant classes in that the latter are paraprofessional <br />classes performing more technical and/or specialized library <br />support services. <br />PRINCIPAL DUTIES <br />Sets up circulation desk for daily activities; prepares date due <br />slips; prepares cash drawer and desk supplies; checks library <br />books and materials in and out utilizing a computerized on-line <br />system; explains library circulation policies and procedures; <br />registers and issues library cards to patrons; checks patron <br />status to verify registration information; calculates and <br />collects fines and other charges for overdue, lost or damaged <br />books; records and balances daily receipts; assists library <br />paraprofessional and professional staff and refers difficult or <br />unusual problems to appropriate supervisory or professional <br />staff members; responds to basic patron requests, by telephone or <br />in person, for information and materials and refers questions of <br />a more technical or reference nature to appropriate staff <br />members; sends notices and reminders to patrons regarding overdue <br />items and books and materials that are received; receives, <br />verifies and releases materials for on-line reserve requests; <br />performs general clerical and typing work; unpacks and sorts <br />daily book shipments and distributes as indicated; maintains an <br />orderly periodical file for public use; receives returned books <br />and materials, reviews due dates and examines items for damages; <br />sorts returned materials for return to local shelves or for <br />
