TO: Honorable Mayor and City Council June 5, 1990 FROM: Jennifer Thornberry, Economic Development Director SUBJECT:Appointment of Council Member as Vice -President of Date: May 30, 1990 Inland Empire Design Institute The County of San Bernardino and eight Inland Empire cities is one of 36 areas across the United States participating in the "Shaping Growth in American Com-nunities Project", a national demonstration effort sponsored by the Washington, DC. -based Partners for Livable Places. The overall goals of the project are to improve the quality of life for the region through amenities and aesthetics, in an effort to mitigate the negative impacts of high growth. The Shaping Growth Project consists of the following three sub -elements: 1. Greening of the Empire The goals of the "greening" project includes the development of expanded tree plantings and greenways for new developments, higher landscape standards in the proposed County Growth Management Plan, and mass volunteer efforts. 2. Inland Empire Design Institute The Design Institute will provide a forum for the discussion of architectural and urban design issues which impact the counties of Riverside and San Bernardino. The Institute will also undertake research relating to architectural and urban design issues and publish information for the benefit of concerned design professionals, the development community, governmental authorities, civic groups, and the general public. 3. Beautification of the I-10 Freeway Corridor The I-10 Freeway beautification project is proposed to improve the appearance of the freeway frontage with alternative landscaping. The project will involve regional intergovernmental cooperation in an effort to beautify a gateway corridor into the Inland Empire region. Attachments: Page 1 of Item No. JAI
