Standard Specifications for
The Insituform@ Process
1. General: These specifications cover the Insituform rehabilitation process for existing
sewer lines and storm drains.
The Insitutube T" is inserted into existing pipe lines in an uncured condition and
thereafter cured using equipment and processes specifically designed to form a tight
fitting, semi-rigid pipe -within -a -pipe. When curing has been accomplished, lateral
connections are reestablished from within the newly formed cured -in-place Insitupipe T"
Conduits rehabilitated by the Insituform process shall be video inspected before lining
and after completed installation and reestablishment of laterals, if any. The video
inspection record shall be made available at no charge to the client for review and final
acceptance of the project.
2. Preparation: Conduit to be rehabilitated shall be cleaned of all loose extraneous matter
which may interfere with the rehabilitation process. Protruding laterals which may
interfere with the rehabilitation shall be removed by the client.
3. Materials: Materials used shall be composites consisting of a fiber felt tube system, a
resin system and a catalyst system.
a. Fiber Felt Tube System: The felt tube shall be a thermoplastic polyester or acrylic
needlefelt of five denier minimum with sufficient needling and crosslapping to
yield an adequate burst strength in the transverse direction (hoop stress). The
layer exposed to the effluent shall have polyurethane or poly -vinyl chloride
bonded to it, normally 0.01 inch thickness and shall be pinhole free (12 oz./sq. yd).
b. Resin Systems: The resin shall be thermosetting polyester resin. The resin shall
have sufficient thixotropic properties to have nondraining characteristics when
impregnated into the felt tube and during the curing process.
c. Catalyst System: The catalyst system shall be compatible with the resin. The resin
shall be catalyzed by the addition of sufficient -catalyst to produce the physical
properties in subsection below.
4. Wet Out of Felt Tube: The contractor shall designate a location where the felt tube will
be vacuum impregnated prior to installation. The contractor shall allow the client to
inspect the material and wet out procedure.
- 1 - 2/90
