CITY OF COLTON <br />FIRE BATTALION COMMANDER <br />DEFINITION <br />Under direction, to supervise the activities of all engine <br />companies in the City on an assigned shift; to plan and conduct a <br />standardized drill program and instruct and examine firefighting <br />personnel in all stages of training; and to do related work as <br />required. <br />EXAMPLES OF DUTIES <br />Has authority over the fire suppression division during a shift; <br />coordinates the activities of all fire companies in firefighting <br />and maintenance work; directs and participates in inspect -ions of <br />personnel, stations and equipment; assists in handling personnel <br />assignments and problems and in maintaining discipline; keeps <br />fire statistics and records of fire losses, personnel and <br />equipment; maintains inventories of apparatus and equipment; <br />responds to all alarms of building fires; assumes command upon <br />arrival at fires and directs the operations of the company or <br />companies responding; determines need of, and calls for or <br />dismisses companies an * d apparatus at fires; makes inspections of <br />new or hazardous situations; supervises the maintenance of <br />departmental rules and regulations; assumes responsibilities of <br />superiors when necessary; functions as departmental drill master; <br />formulates and supervises the technical instruction program and <br />intensive drilling of firefighting personnel; observes actual <br />firefighting situations to determine needs for additional <br />training; prepares instructional information; conducts tests and <br />demonstrations; observes and studies principles of modern <br />firefighting, fire prevention, rescue and first aid, ventilation, <br />salvage and other fields for development of training materials; <br />makes recommendations on fire training curriculum; develops <br />visual aids to instruction; keeps records and prepares reports; <br />assists in fighting major fires; responds to emergency call of <br />duty. <br />SPECIAL REQUIREMENT <br />Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Class B California <br />Driver's License and a good driving record prior to employment. <br />DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS <br />KNOWLEDGE OF: <br />Thorough knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices <br />involved in firefighting; thorough knowledge of fire prevention <br />and investigation techniques; the operation and maintenance of a <br />variety of fire apparatus and equipment. <br />
