STRATTON, CHIEF OF POLICE <br />SUBJECT: RADIO EQUIPMENT LEASE - PURCHASE <br />BACKGROUND <br />Date: <br />AG EEMENT <br />9-19-91 <br />San Bernardino County began the 800 MHz Project in 1985 to develop an <br />efficient radio network to meet the demands of the increased <br />emergency calls for police and fire service. Edmund Sotelo, former <br />City Manager, signed the Letter of Intent to Participate in the 800 <br />MHz Project. To meet the increased demands of emergency service, the <br />mayors of San Bernardino County cities providing their own police <br />departments, joined the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department in <br />adapting their communication system to the 800 MHz. The network will <br />be completed by the end of 1992, providing a centralized regional <br />communications system for police and fire communications. <br />DISCUSSION <br />The San Bernardino Sheriff's Department initiated the 800 MHz Project <br />in 1985 to increase the potential of radio communications for fire <br />and police service. Representatives from the Colton Police <br />Department participated in this project to prepare the police <br />department for the inevitable change to 800 MHz as no additional <br />frequencies were available to meet the escalating radio demands in <br />Southern California. The 800 MHz System will handle the <br />communication needs of all police agencies within the San Bernardino <br />County emergency response systems. In 1988, the Office of Management <br />Services was established to manage the 800 MHz communication system <br />for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and those police <br />agencies entering in to the system. By the close of 1992, the police <br />and fire agencies in San Bernardino County will be networked together <br />through the 800 MHz System. <br />Attachments: <br />Page 1 of_ 2-- Item No. 13 <br />
