R-148-07 <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE <br />CITY OF COLTON SUPPORTING THE LEAGUE OF <br />CA CITIES RECOMMENDATION TO THE UNITED <br />STATES POSTAL SERVICE FOR ISSUANCE OF A <br />POSTAL STAMP HONORING THE LATE AND FORMER <br />MAYOR OF LOS ANGELES, TOM BRADLEY. <br />WHEREAS, Tom Bradley's record of public service to the citizens of Los Angles, the <br />State of California and the nation has left a legacy for many to follow; and <br />WHEREAS, Tom Bradley's historical record deserves the highest recognition from the <br />State of California and the United States; and <br />WHEREAS, Tom Bradley attended the Los Angeles public school system and excelled <br />both academically and athletically; and <br />WHEREAS, Tom Bradley attended the University of California in Los Angeles where <br />he soon distinguished himself as an outstanding track and field athlete; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1940, Tom Bradley joined the Los Angeles Police Department and <br />while working full time, also attended Southwestern University Law School at night; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1956, Tom Bradley graduated from Southwestern University with a Law <br />Degree and soon passed the State Bar Exam and went on to become a lawyer; and <br />WHEREAS, after 21 years of service with the Los Angeles Police Department, Tom <br />Bradley retired with the rank of Lieutenant, the highest rank held by an African American <br />police officer at that time; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1963, Tom Bradley was elected to serve on the Los Angeles City <br />Council and served a 10 -year tenure as Council Member; and <br />WHEREAS, in 1973, Tom Bradley was elected as the 37th Mayor of Los Angeles—the <br />largest city in California and one of the largest cities in the United States; and <br />Resolution No <br />-1- <br />Council Meeting, November 20, 2007 <br />
