AGENDA REPORT
CITY OF COLTON
For City Council Meeting of
July 15, 1997
July 9, 1997
TO: MAYOR GAYTAN, CITY COUNCIL AND CITY MANAGER
FROM: Julie Hayward Biggs, City Atto qep
SUBJECT: Ballot Measure - Election From Districts
Councilmember Sandoval has requested that the attached revision to the City's
election by district ordinance be placed on the November 1997 ballot. If adopted by the
electorate, this would change the current system of electing members to the City Council.
Under the existing ordinance, members of the City Council must reside in specific districts and
only the residents in those districts vote for their representative on the City Council. Under the
proposed ordinance all voters in the City will vote for all councilmembers, but the
councilmembers must reside in the current electoral districts. The Mayor would continue to be
elected at -large.
The financial effect on the City would be that the cost of City Council elections
would be increased due to the fact that in each Council election, all voters in the City will be
voting.
Concurrence:
h 4AAC,
Gracie Fern4AZ Iftarmon, Acting City Manager
Item No. 24
