CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For Council Meeting of September, 6, 1994
To: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
From:. PETER MIRELES, CHIEF OF POLICE Date: August 29, 1994
Subject: .Authorization of Police Cadet Program
BACKGROUND:
The Colton Police Department presently has an established Police Explorer Post for youth
interested in a career in law enforcement. The Department would seek to expand on this program
and establish a Police Cadet Program.
DISCUSSION:
The Police Department recognizes it has a responsibility to encourage and guide youth and young
adults into a career in law enforcement. As a basis for this, the department, with the
encouragement of the City Council, began the Police Explorer Post in 1988. The Police Explorer
Program targets high school age youth and exposes them to a career in law enforcement.
The Police Department now seeks to expand on the Explorer Program by establishing a Police
Cadet Program within the department.
The Police Cadet Program would be designed as a career development program for the youth of
our community and would use the Explorer Program as a basis of recruitment.
The Police Cadet Program would be established as a part-time position of 20 hours per week on a
year around basis. The program would stress continuing education by requiring enrollment as a
full time student at an accredited college or university.
The program would be designed to be both a training ground for a future in law enforcement and
assist staff in their daily duties. Some essential functions would include completing police
reports on minor incidents, handling citizens at the front counter, assist in answering telephones,
enter and retrieve data from computers, process evidence and recovered property, take
correspondence and items to allied agencies and impounding vehicles. This is by no means a
complete list of ways to gain valuable training but is an example of duties that would be
performed by a cadet.
Page 1 of 1 Item No.
