CITY OF COLTON
prlortoa
AGENDA REPORT ..—`-..
Oli..44
For Council Meeting Of August 3, 1993 of
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL DATE: July 28, 1993
FROM: Max Bowman
Interim Director of Recreation and Human Services
SUBJECT: Renaming of the Colton Boxing Gym to the Savas Robledo Boxing Gym
BA CKGROUND/DISCUSSION
Mr. Savas Robledo dedicated a large portion of his life promoting the sport of boxing to the youth of Colton.
Years ago, as today, the youth of our community needed alternatives to gangs, drugs and mischief. The youth
of our community needed positive role models to show them that life is full of rich rewards provided they work
hard and stay on the right path. Savas Robledo provided such a role model for many years.
Savas Robledo was born in Jalisco, Mexico on December 5, 1921, and came to Colton when his family moved
here in 1924. Savas graduated from Colton High School in 1942. He first became involved with the sport of
boxing at the age of seven years, and boxed until he married his wife Elsie in 1943, at 22 years of age. During
his tenure as a fighter, he fought 25 professional bouts and fought over 200 fights as an amateur. Although he
retired as a fighter in 1943, he continued to be active in the sport by coaching and training our youth until his
death in 1992
Savas, along with Henry Mendoza was active in forming the Colton Boxing Club which was founded in 1975.
The Colton Boxing Club gym was originally located on "N" Street in South Colton before moving to its present
location at Municipal Park (previously the Little Colton Theater). Mr. 'Robiedo's dedication to the sport of
boxing, has been recognized in the past as he received the City of Colton Recognition Award in 1989, for
outstanding dedication to the Colton Community and in 1990, he received the Max J. Lofy Humanitarian
Award for Meritorious and Outstanding Community Service. Mr. Robledo also dedicated a great deal of time
and energy to the Community's youth as an active Scout Leader and organizer in the City of Colton.
In addition to the awards mentioned above, Savas Robledo has been acknowledged for his dedication to the
Community and its youth over the years by receiving the following honors:
Boxing
1992 The Cauliflower Alley Club Youth Service Award (For many years of service and dedication to the youth
of San Bernardino County and the San Gorgonio Pass Area)
Scouting
1970 Scouter of the Year Award
1975 The Silver Beaver Award (Scouting's Highest Award)
1985 The Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award (for Unselfish Service to the Minority Youth of America)
to
no, rc
