JOHNSON� <br />Personnel Director <br />SUBJECT: PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR/CITY ENGINEER - APPROVAL OF JOB DESCRIPTION <br />AND SALARY RANGE <br />BACKGROUND <br />The Public Works Director position is currently vacant. In order to more efficiently manage the Public Works <br />Department at a significant cost savings to the city, the following reorganization is proposed: <br />1 - Approve the job description and salary range for Public Works Director/City Engineer. This is the <br />same range as Electric Utility Director and Public Utilities Director. Registration as a Civil Engineer <br />in the State of California is required. A statewide recruitment will be conducted to locate a suitable <br />candidate. <br />2. Eliminate the position of Public Works Director. <br />The city currently spends a considerable amount for outside engineering. The new Public Works Director/City <br />Engineer will be able to handle many of the projects now contracted out, saving the City a significant amount <br />of money. It would be more efficient to handle these matters in-house. In addition, most cities our size have <br />a full-time employee on staff who serves as the City Engineer. In most cases he/she is also the Public Works <br />Director. <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />Staff recommends that the attached job description be adopted and the resolution be approved establishing the <br />salary for Public Works Director/City Engineer. <br />Attachments <br />BI:AGNPWENG <br />a <br />
