CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
FOR THE CITY COUNCIL MEETING OF November 1, 2005
TO: I HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS
FROM: AMER JAKHER, P.E., CITY ENGINEER
SUBJECT: APPROVE RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ADDITION OF THE
COLTON MUSEUM RESTORATION PROJECT TO FISCAL YEAR
2005/2006 CIP; APPROPRIATING GRANT FUNDS TO BE USED
FOR THE COLTON MUSEUM RESTORATION PROJECT IN THE
AMOUNT OF $29,937; AND THE PURCHASE OF PARK BENCHES
FOR AN AMOUNT NOT TO EXCEED $5,000.00.
DATE:
OCTOBER 24, 2005
BACKGROUND:
Dr. D.L. Van Voorhis, a long time resident and dentist within the City of Colton, has donated an
antique -looking clock that is a replica of a clock that stood in downtown Colton until the mid -
1900s. The clock is black bronze with gold gilding. The clock will have a brass plaque on its base
that indicates Dr. Van Voorhis' appreciation for Colton and that Colton was indeed "a great place to
grown up in." Per the donor's request, the intended location of the clock is to the side of the
Carnegie Library. The anticipated dedication ceremony date is November 19, which is contingent
upon the delivery of the clock from its manufacturer.
ANALYSIS/DISCUSSION:
The clock itself adds great aesthetic value not only to the Carnegie Library, but to all of Colton,
especially Colton's downtown. Staff suggests the addition of benches to the project area.
Installation of benches at this site will accentuate the aesthetic qualities of the clock and invites
positive attention to the surrounding local businesses and neighborhood communities. Additions to
the Carnegie Library will require approval from the City of Colton's Historic Preservation
Committee. The clock and benches will be installed on the perimeter of this historic site.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT:
None
CONFLICT OF INTEREST:
None.
