TO
FROM:
CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
For Council Meeting of— May 5, 1992
Honorable Mayor and City Council
DAVID G. HALL, Fire Chie 4ee
SUBJECT:
AMBULANCES - AUTHORIZE PURCHASE
OF TWO MODULAR UNITS
BACKGROUND:
Date
4/29/92
The Colton Fire Department has been in the paramedic business
since 1975 providing high quality emergency medical service
to the citizens and visitors of the city. The private
ambulance companies have been providing the transport of all
patients and charging for those services, even though city
paramedics provided the major portion of the required
service, at the scene and during transport.
DISCUSSION•
The Fire Department's E.M.S. service is one of the best in
the county, and it provides paramedic service for all of its
four strategically located stations. The only missing
component for a complete package service, from the incident
site to the hospital, is the initiation of a Fire Department
operated ambulance.
A city operated ambulance could and would generate revenue
never before obtainable through its Fire E.M.S. service.
This service could be brought on line with existing personnel
and the purchase of two (2) modular type ambulances and a
third, if needed in the distant future. The time required
from the purchase date to delivery is approximately 60-90
days depending on the design features. With the swift
implementation of purchase authorization, the citizens of
Colton could be receiving complete upgraded E.M.S. service
from the site to the hospital by August 1, 1992, and the city
could be recovering revenue now lost to the private trans-
porter to offset the operational costs of the paramedic
program. It would also provide a higher level at a reduced
rate to all who take advantage of the service.
Attachments:
Item No.
Page 1 of ---
