Among these
initiatives
are:
1. Federal an
d State tax incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles.
2. A California rule. which requires that two percent of all new vehicles offered for sale in
the state starting in 1998 must emit no pollutan
ts. Electric vehicles, alone, currently
meet that criteria.
3. Efforts by Southern California Edison,. the Los Angeles Department of Water and
Power and other organizations. to develop an electric vehicle infrastructure and
Promote
development of electric vehicles.
Purchasing an .electric vehicle is consistent with regional efforts to develop an electric
transportation industry. In addition, by gaining practical experience in operating and maintaining
an electric vehicle, Electric Department and Public Works Department personnel. can assess the
feasibility of fixture electric vehicle fleet purchases. Experience gained will also be beneficial in
Providing
information on electric vehicles to Colton citizens.
IN
Pagel of 2 Item N0.
