CITY OF COLTON
AGENDA REPORT
1887
0
For Council Meeting of February 16, 1993
TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
DATE: February 10, 1993
FROM: GORDON R. JOHNSON
Personnel Director
SUBJECT: PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR/CITY ENGINEER - APPROVAL OF JOB DESCRIPTION
AND SALARY RANGE
BACKGROUND
The Public Works Director position is currently vacant. In order to more efficiently manage the Public Works
Department at a significant cost savings to the city, the following reorganization is proposed:
1 - Approve the job description and salary range for Public Works Director/City Engineer. This is the
same range as Electric Utility Director and Public Utilities Director. Registration as a Civil Engineer
in the State of California is required. A statewide recruitment will be conducted to locate a suitable
candidate.
2. Eliminate the position of Public Works Director.
The city currently spends a considerable amount for outside engineering. The new Public Works Director/City
Engineer will be able to handle many of the projects now contracted out, saving the City a significant amount
of money. It would be more efficient to handle these matters in-house. In addition, most cities our size have
a full-time employee on staff who serves as the City Engineer. In most cases he/she is also the Public Works
Director.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the attached job description be adopted and the resolution be approved establishing the
salary for Public Works Director/City Engineer.
Attachments
BI:AGNPWENG
a
