Harmon, Acting City Manager <br />From: Randy Anstine, Neighborhood Services <br />RECEIVED <br />CITY OF C [ A NG R <br />Subject: Authorize the Filing of a Grant Application With the Office <br />of Criminal Justice Planning (OCJP) For A Gang Violence <br />Suppression Mentoring Program <br />Date: May 20, 1997 <br />BACKGROUND: <br />The State OCJP is soliciting proposals from cities for the Gang Violence Suppression Mentoring <br />Program (MP). The Neighborhood Services Department is preparing an application for funding <br />under this program. If approved, the City of Colton would be awarded $50,000 a year for two <br />years, for a gang mentoring program. There is no monetary match required for this grant <br />program. <br />The primary purpose of the proposed program will be aimed at keeping Colton kids gang -free. <br />The proposed program combines mentoring, education, and recreation to help increase self- <br />esteem, self-confidence and to develop leadership skills. The program will bring together <br />community leaders, businesses, and interested citizens to mentor at -risk youth. The focus of <br />this program will be to provide education, assistance and guidance in assisting these young <br />people to change their lives. <br />The mentoring program will offer an exciting opportunity for volunteers who want to give an at - <br />risk youth the extra support needed to keep him or her out of gangs. Mentors will be men and <br />women, who are caring and who can act as strong role models. Mentors will be required to <br />spend a minimum of four hours per month in quality interaction with their mentee. Mentors and <br />mentees will go through an orientation on the program's philosophy and goals and objectives, <br />before being matched with one another. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: <br />None. No match is required for this grant. <br />ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: <br />None <br />RECOMMENDATION: <br />4 Staff recommends that the Council approve the filing of the grant application for a Gang <br />Mentoring Program, in the amount of $50,000.. <br />Item No. 8 <br />
