Item #19 <br />CITY OF COLTON <br />AGENDA REPORT <br />FOR COUNCIL MEETING OF AUGUST 6, 2002 <br />TO: HONORABLE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL <br />FROM: AMER JAKHER, P.E., CITY ENGINEER <br />SUBJECT: REQUEST FOR RECRUITMENT AND RATIFICATION FOR <br />THE FULL TIME POSITIONS OF ENGINEERING ASSISTANT <br />AND ASSOCIATE ENGINEER, IN THE ENGINEERING <br />DEPARTMENT <br />DATE: JULY 22, 2002 <br />BACKGROUND: <br />On June 18, 2002, City Council approved amended budget for Fiscal Year 2002/2003. As part <br />of this new budget, two new Engineering positions were funded. The titles of these positions are <br />Engineering Assistant and Associate Engineer. <br />DISCUSSION/ANALYSIS: <br />The Engineering Department is requesting authorization to recruit for these two additional <br />positions commencing Fiscal Year 2002-2003 in order to administer current backlog of projects. <br />The Engineering Department has identified approximately 25 CIP projects in various stages of <br />completion. Current staffing is inadequate to administer these projects on a timely manner. <br />Job descriptions were approved on July 18, 2002. The Salary Study consultant provided salary <br />information and Payroll developed the proposed salary ranges for each position: <br />Engineering Assistant of $4200 - $5105 per month <br />Associate Engineer of $5200 — 6321 per month <br />• Engineering Assistant ($4,200-$5,105/mo) <br />This is an entry-level position that requires basic knowledge of Civil Engineering and a <br />Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field. <br />• Associate Engineer (5,200-$6,321/mo) <br />This position requires 4 years of experience in City Government with at least 2 years in <br />Capital Improvement projects, in addition to the requirements of Engineering Assistant. <br />P:WGENDA REPORTS\080602\squires deed rpt.doc <br />
