JOHNSON �`- Personnel Director SUBJECT: PROPOSED DISABILITY RETIREMENT/POLICE OFFICER GEORGE NUNEZ BACKGROUND: Officer George Nunez has been employed by the City of Colton as a Police Officer since February 4, 1970. On May 12, 1993, Officer Nunez sustained chest pain while working and subsequently had a heart attack. Officer Nunez was admitted to Kaiser Hospital and treated by Dr. Chen who noted an abnormal electrocardiogram. Officer Nunez was referred to Loma Linda Hospital for further testing. A coronary angiogram was performed at Loma Linda by Dr. Long. The angiogram showed that Officer Nunez had two heart blockages. Angioplasty was performed on three separate occasions for blockage, but this procedure was unsuccessful. Officer Nunez continued treatment with Internist Dr. Long and Kenneth R. Jutzy M.D., and remained on industrial injury leave. On December 17, 1993, Officer Nunez was examined by Agreed Medical Examiner Dr. Alan Markovitz. On January 17, 1994, the City received the doctor's report which stated that Officer Nunez should "avoid very heavy work and undue emotional stress" and that his condition is permanent and stationary. RECOMMENDATION: Based on the recommendations of Dr. Markowitz and the City's workers' compensation attorney Philip Mark and the health of Officer Nunez, he will be unable to return to his duties as a Police Officer. Under PERS law, the City Council or its designee makes the determination as to when a Safety employee is disabled and if the injury is industrial. Acting Police Chief Bernie Lunsford and I recommend that the City Council determine that Officer Nunez be retired for industrial disability effective February 2, 1994, by adopting the attached resolution. t"-\ () ,f CONCUR: Attachment .�� Vo, -- 54
