MAYOR AND COUNCIL ITEMS:
Boards & Commissions
Moved by Councilman Rios, seconded by Councilman Rehrer, ratifying
Mayor's reappointment of Richard Prieto to the Planning Commission.
Unanimous vote.
CORRESPONDENCE:
Storm Drains
Mill Street
Mrs. Marina Rojas, 524 West Mill, Colton, spoke to the City Council
with regard to the serious flooding problems encountered at her home
during the recent rain storms, in particular the evening of November
4th. Mrs. Rojas explained the procedures she went through to obtain
help from the City and the various departments that were called for
assistance. Mrs. Rojas stated she was not given a sufficient number
of sand bags to stop the flooding water, and was told the limit was
twenty; also the Fire Department was not able to pump the water from
her house or garage, which did a great deal of damage.
Mrs. Rojas said she would like to know what has been done to date to
rectify the storm drain problem in their area, what is the status of
a pending project, and what permanent solution will be done to take
care of any future flooding.
City Manager Benest responded that he would definitely follow-up with
Staff Members to ascertain the problems in communications and assis-
tance. Mr. Benest advised that he and Mayor Gonzales have had approxi-
mately 6 or 7 meetings with the City of San Bernardino and the County
of San Bernardino on the need for storm drains in that area, the con-
tinued flooding, and funding for improvements to alleviate the prob-
lems.
Mr. Benest said with more development in the area, there will be more
run-off; also, the majority of the water comes from the County area,
due to the natural slope and terrain.
Mr. Benest stated the City is very concerned about this problem, and
has been working with other entities in an attempt to resolve these
problems.
Mr. Benest concluded he would like to schedule a meeting with all of
the residents of the area in question, and see if some emergency
measures can be established.
Mr. Tony Montoya, 484 West Mill Street, Colton, and Mr. John Longfield,
1809 Cottonwood, Colton, also addressed the Council on the flooding
problems in their areas.
2
