In closing Mr. Pardau
said the City of Colton has been presented with an unprecedented
window of opportunity to bring a $1.5 billion investment to the
community which not only will create hundreds of direct local jobs,
will serve as the catalyst for the creation of hundreds of indirect
local jobs and will give a major boost to California's recycling
market development efforts, but also, will focus Statewide and
national attention on the City's vision and leadership in the
development of a "new generation" of economically and
environmentally sound regional industrial centers.
Ms. Christine Kinne, California Environmental Protection Agency,
Sacramento - California RED TEAM, informed the audience that her
role and that of California Environmental Protection Agency is to
work with cities, counties and businesses to help make projects
like this happen through the permit process. For this particular
project the RED TEAM, a group of experts in various fields have
joined together to make it happen.
Mayor Gonzales asked if this was going to help Colton comply with
AB939. Mr. Aguilar said "yes, someone can contact me and I will
provide the information". Newspaper is considered contaminated but
it can be processed as fuel without endangering the air.
Mr. Paul Sweeney, Office of Permit Assistance, Trade and Commerce
Agency, Los Angeles, California RED TEAM, stated that Colton had a
very unique site. A lot of work needs to be done, he is available
to help the City. He was surprised to hear the Bloedel has been
sold on Colton. He believed this is not true, Bloedel has not made
a choice.
Planning Commissioner Sanders asked if he was suggesting that there
are better offers. Has there been a competitive bid?
Mr. Aguilar said the main product is 175 tons of material,
recyclable newsprint. The opportunity is definitely there. This
is up for grabs. All we have said is these are the advantages of
AUG 18 1994
