Road/Cooley Drive was an alternative to a crossing guard in front of the school. He <br />suggested that the best alternative was to have a crosswalk at Ash Street/Cooley <br />Drive and one at Old Ranch Road/Cooley Drive. He supported CM Bennett's <br />recommendation. <br />Mr. John Mitchell, Colton resident, found impractical the idea for a crosswalk in the <br />middle of the road. He saw a Need for a crosswalk at Old Ranch Road/Cooley Drive. <br />Ms. Donna Hadden said she lived 4 blocks from Cooley Ranch School. She said there <br />was a crossing guard at the northside of the School and one is needed at the <br />southside. She noted that 650 kids attend that school and there is need traffic <br />control. <br />Ms. Julie Fonda said CM Bennett's idea was good but wondered who was going to <br />keep the kids from crossing as they wished. CM Bennett said she was a substitute <br />teacher, she was required to assist the children. <br />Consulting Engineer Larry Eisenhart said he studied the proposed items and found <br />there were no violations of state-wide standards. He commented that crosswalks <br />were two painted lines to assist the pedestrian and the driver. He noted the problem <br />arose with an unprotected crosswalk. <br />After lengthy discussion, CM Hansen withdrew his second to the primary motion and <br />the primary motion failed for lack of second. The video tape of the area, taken by <br />CM/Director Hutton, was played. <br />Motion/second by CM Bennett/Beltran to approve Alternative One, adding the second <br />crosswalk at Cooley Drive and Old Ranch Road. to be included in next year's budget, <br />along with the request for funds for 1/2 guard for that crosswalk, with the remaining <br />half to be paid by the School District. Motion carried upon Unanimous vote. <br />Item No. 23: <br />Safety Signs <br />For children's safety, CM Bennett moved to have crossing signs, announcing "Slow <br />School Zone", to be placed on both sides of the street on Cooley Drive. The motion <br />was seconded by Mayor Fulp and it carried with CM Hutton absent and CM Beltran <br />away from the dais. <br />Item No. 24: <br />Rumble Buttons <br />3 <br />JUP4 6 1,1996 <br />
