CITY OF COLTON
POLICE DISPATCHER I
POLICE DISPATCHER H
To receive all incoming calls for police assistance and dispatch necessary units; and to perform a
variety of general support duties related to communications activities.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Police Dispatcher I
This is the entry level class in the Police Dispatcher class series. Positions in this class will usually
perform most of the duties required of a Police Dispatcher II, but are not expected to function at
the same skill level and usually exercise less independent direction and judgment in matters related
to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits a
structured and established pattern. Generally, changes in procedures or exceptions are explained
in detail as they arise. Under the flexible staffing concept, positions assigned to the Police
Dispatcher I class may reasonably expect to progress to the II level with training, experience, and
satisfactory job performance.
Police Dispatcher II
This is the journey level in the class series. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are
normally filled by advancement from the Police Dispatcher I class or, when filled from the outside,
require prior experience in receiving and dispatching emergency calls. Appointment to the higher
class requires that the employee be performing substantially the full range of duties for the class
and meet the qualification standards for the class. All positions assigned to this class require the
ability to work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
Police Dispatcher I
Receives immediate supervision from a Sergeant. Technical and/or functional supervision may be
provided by other police staff.
Exercises no supervision.
Police Dispatcher II
Receives general supervision from a Sergeant.
May exercise technical and/or functional supervision over subordinate personnel.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES: Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
Receives emergency calls from the public requesting police or other emergency service;
determines nature, location and priority of emergency, and dispatches police units as necessary or
transfer calls to appropriate agency in accordance with established procedures; answers 911 calls.
